Here is a list of “news community” websites in the United States known to The Media Giraffe Project. In general, websites spawned by established daily newspapers are not included. Where the site name is a hypertext link, clicking will open a Media Giraffe profile page.  Please submit suggestions for additional listings, or profile update information to

CENTER FOR CITIZEN MEDIA NEWS ABOUT CITIZEN JOURNALISM

FIRST . . . OTHER LISTS AND RESOURCES

  • Doug McGill's site, The McGill Report, offers advice on citizen-journalism training, including a November, 2007, post -- the seven things he has learned. (MCGILL BACKGROUND)
  • In November, 2007, the Berkman Center at Harvard Law School launched the Citizen Media Law Project, which provides advice -- including free legal assistance, to citizen's struggling with copyright, libel and operational issues.
  • The New Voices project, part of J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland-College Park, has developed reports and ongoing advice about citizen-journalism efforts in the United States. J-Lab also runs the J-Learning website, a "how-to" resource for community journalism.
  • On Jan. 1, 2007, Lisa Williams of H2OTown in Watertown, Mass. (USA), launched Placeblogger.COM, a new site which is tracking websites and blogs which cover news as well as the sense of local places. You can use to search by geography. Media Giraffe previewed Placeblogger in June.
  • Also in January, 2007, former daily-newspaper webmaster K. Paul Mallasch, who is based in Muncie, Ind. (USA)  has started a service to track local ciitizen-journalism efforts. It's at LocalJournalism.net
  • Earlier, Lisa Williams of H2OTown, also was maintaining a list of local news community resources at: http://del.icio.us/tag/localnewsapalooza?setcount=100
  • Jonathan Dube's Cyberjournalist.net webset of The Media Center at The American Press Institute is also maintaining a list of local and niche news sites at: http://www.cyberjournalist.net/news/002226.php
  • A third resource is the DeepBlog.COM site's list:
    http://deepblog.com/db2.html
  • Finally, Paul Bass of the New Haven Independent authored some
analysis of local blogs which is posted at:
