Co-op or collaborative ownership
A new idea for newspaper ownership -- tap the reader co-op
Boston University journalism professor Chris Daly, an MGP2006 alum, has done some number crunching and is proposing that the nation's premier newspapers -- under seige from some investors -- essentially reform themselves as cooperatives -- with investment from member/readers. Daly's idea -- the newspaper as co-op -- is one form of ownership that has not been tried, but is increasingly posed as something worth trying. Read his post by clicking on the headline.

FCC's alleged quashing of 2004 draft study which boosted local-TV ownership criticized by Sen. Boxer and media activists
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., has unleashed a fresh round of criticism of the FCC's handling of media consolidation. She made public a 2004 "working draft" of a study by two researchers which found that locally owned TV stations produce on the average about five minutes per newscast more local news than those owned non-locally. Antitrust/Monopolies
Gannett, NYT moves in Detroit, Boston reviewed by antitrust enforcers
Gannett Co. planned to acquire Hometown Communications, Inc. which competitors say could lead to diminished competition in the suburban markets of Detroit and Cincinnati. The New York Times invested in its local newspaper rival, Metro Boston. The Boston Herald complained that this type of action would hurt readers and advertisers alike in the Boston area, as well as violate a legal standard used to measure market consolidation. The plans by both newspapers were under investigation by federal anti-trust enforcers. (Originally reported by the Wall Street Journal's John R. Wilke and James Bandler on Jan. 24, 2005) Visit Website ]

Co-op or collaborative ownership
The power of the community press
Nonprofit community press is powerful, says Jordan Moss at Shelterforce Online, citing the successful changes that newspapers have made in communities like the Bronx and Fenway in Boston. Because community newspapers have the interests of the community in mind, they can cover issues that mainstream press won't, and they can cover them over and over until they're solved. Though they're hard to fund, community papers are an asset to both community residents and more mainstream media, pressing "the envelope of what bigger papers are willing to cover," says Jon Ball, who volunteers at the Fenway News.
