VillageSoup.com acquires competing weekly newspapers in vindication of online model (with AUDIO)
The owner of mid-coast Maine's legacy weekly newspapers has sold out to the man who pioneered VillageSoup.com, a learn-share-shop local online news community which is developing its platform as open source. The seller will adopt the platform at its Alabama newspapers.

Duke hosts "next newsroom" gathering for 60
Some 60 journalists and journalism educators gathered at Duke University April 3-4 in Durham, N.C., as the school makes plans to construct an integrated building for housing multimedia campus resources. The Next Newsroom gathering featured breakout discussions on crowdsourcing, news financing, social networking and skills of the future.

An early expert at training citizen journalists has authored "What I've Learned Teaching Citizen Journalists," an essay listing seven lessons learned. Doug McGill is a former New York Times reporter, foreign correspondent, university lecturer and Internet innovator. He also briefly headed the World Press Institute.
