UMass Amherst sits on the eastern edge of the Connecticut River Valley bordered by rolling hills. It is an area for bicycle touring, easy hikes and vistas, historical, cultural, entertainment and museum options. Besides Amherst itself, the adjacent small city of Northampton is brimming with restaurants and shops. Events are coordinated year-round by Five Colleges Inc. Some pre-/post-summit options include:
MUSEUMS 10 -- Historic Deerfield and the museums of the Five Colleges have recently organized as "Museums 10."
The Amhest College Natural History Museum opened on June 6 an $18 million new building to house the third-largest collection of dinosaur and other artifacts in New England. It's a short bus ride or a longish walk (about 1.5 miles) from the UMass Campus Center and open noon-4 p.m. daily except Monday.
