Founded,
secured initial financing, established business relationships, prepared
financials and business plans for direct sales startup focusing on retail items
needed by a specific population. Business closed due to lack of capital.
1995-2000: Executive Positions with
Lycos, Inc. and Tripod, Inc.
Various
executive positions with Internet startup that was subsequently purchased by
larger Internet company. Helped build both companies into top-ten Internet
sites. Held positions of Executive Director, Production Director, VP Marketing,
and VP Business Development. Responsibilities included: production management,
editorial direction, internet community building, advertising and revenue
strategies, negotiating contracts with large and small companies, planning of
all aspects of standard and “guerilla” marketing, website architecture and
design, and overall strategy. Left when company moved most employees out of
area.
1994-1995: Editorial Director, Utne Reader Magazine
Part
of executive team of bi-monthly periodical, responsible for editorial strategy,
planning, and new ventures. Launched magazine’s Internet and book divisions.
1974-1994: Founder, Executive Director, Graywolf Press
Founded
and ran successful literary book publishing company that started as a
hand-printer of limited edition books and ended as nonprofit organization
publishing 20+ books annually. Very active in design, innovative book marketing,
publicity, editorial, and all aspects of nonprofit management. Instrumental in
founding Consortium Book Marketing, a national sales and distribution company
for mid-sized and smaller publishers. Still have strong contacts among
booksellers, critics, agents, distributors, etc.
